In a July 30 letter, the Fort A.P. Hill commander Lt.Col. John Haefner released the finding of "No Significant Impact" determined by a recently completed Environment Assessment for a U.S. Army Reserve Center to be located at the post. The public can read the findings at the Bowling Green Library, the Port Royal Library and the Essex Library in Tappahannock. The document can also be found on the Fort A.P. Hill website at http://www.aphill.army.mil/sites/directorates/ea.asp.
Public comments will be received until September 4. Send your response to the Fort A.P. Hill's Public Affairs Office, 18436 4th Street, Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia 22427 or by email to Jennifer.Erickson3@us.army.mil. You can also call the Public Affairs Office at 804-633-8324. The comments will determine whether an Environmental Impact Study will be made.
One hundred eighty-five reservists will train one weekend a month and two weeks a year at the 15-acre proposed Army Reserve Center where 109 vehicles, 159 trailers and one track vehicle will be kept. Called a Multi-Role Bridge Company, the reservists will train in the transportation, assembly, disassembly, maintenance and retrieval of U.S. Army bridging systems.
No small arms firing or artillery firing will occur at the site, though the reservists may train at other existing live-fire ranges and schedule use of the facilities like any other visiting unit. Twelve full time personnel will be stationed there. Two possible sites are proposed, a preferred one at the intersection of A.P. Hill Drive and Campbell Road, and the other off Toombs Trail, northwest of Campbell Road and Archer Camp.
