Curly Joe survives a catastrophe

Curly Joe, a happy little dog though now three-legged, is back in Orlean's arms after an awful ordeal for both dog and master. It all started back in April when Curly Joe, a poodle-beagle-Chihuahua mix, was lounging in the middle of Antioch Road in Milford, when a car barreled through and struck him. His front right leg badly broken, and leaving him shrieking, the driver didn't stop.

Though put in a cast, the leg got infected and required amputation, but Orlean, who was out of work, didn't have the $800 required to pay the vet. It looked like Curly Joe was doomed. "I couldn't eat or sleep," Orlean said. Fortunately the Humane Society of Caroline County came to the rescue, providing $400, and the S.T.A.R.T. Program of Woodbridge provided the rest. "He's a special little guy and I'm glad I get to keep him," said Orlean.
