It's been 37 years since Caroline's most famous racehorse, the dashing Secretariat, won the Triple Crown in 1973, and the thoroughbred is still winning honors.
Delegate Chris Peace announced January 4 he has introduced House Resolution 13 to honor Secretariat on his 40th birthday.
The stallion was born March 30, 1970 in the foaling shed at Meadow Farm in southern Caroline, now known as Meadow Event Park, home of the State Fair of Virginia. The foaling shed still stands, though its been moved to another site in the park.
"I am proud to represent a district rich in Virginia horse history and equine heritage," said Delegate Peace. He noted that only 11 other horses have won the Triple Crown - winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
Every year Caroline celebrates Secretariat's birthday. Kathy Beard, Tourism Manager, said the Office of Economic Development and Tourism is finalizing plans for this year's celebration.
